If you are throwing your party during lunch, I would suggest a chicken meal, it's easy and inexpensive. If it's late morning give a nice classic brunch, if it's in mid afternoon which is usually the case, finger food are enough to suffice with some nice desserts to impress those with a sweet tooth.
If you are having your baby shower during dinnertime of course dinner is going to be expected.

The first thing to consider when you plan an event that involves the preparation of food is to find out how many people are coming to your event!
If you have a group of 25 and more coming, I would suggest to have finger food, sandwiches and homemade soup, appetizers and desserts. If you only expect a small group then by all means go way out and prepare a wonderful meal with all the trimmings, something they won't soon forget!
